Youth Poster Contest and Historical Exhibition Now Open for Registration

May marks Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI Heritage Month), a time to celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of AAPI communities across the United States.

Following the success of last year’s inaugural events, the 2026 Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Poster Contest and U.S. AAPI History Exhibition are back! Youth of all ages are invited to explore AAPI history through creative expression and share their stories with the broader community. This year, high school students are especially encouraged to take an active role in organizing the exhibition, gaining leadership and teamwork experience while promoting AAPI heritage.

Expanding Impact in Its Second Year

Last year, the events were showcased at multiple locations, including:

  • Cary Regional Library
  • East Chapel Hill High School
  • Ravenscroft School
  • Common Roots Festival
  • Community Spring Festival

At the library, daily attendance exceeded 1,000 visitors. Staff praised the exhibition for its clear and engaging presentation of AAPI history, which enhanced community understanding and fostered cross-cultural awareness. During the spring festival, attendees expressed excitement and curiosity. One visitor shared, “I had no idea about this history before. I didn’t realize AAPI communities have such rich and interconnected stories.” The exhibition not only broadened perspectives but also deepened appreciation for the diversity of AAPI cultures.

University Partnership Brings Expertise

In 2025, the event partnered with Duke University’s East Asian Studies Department, where faculty and students provided guidance to participating youth on research and historical storytelling. This collaboration enriched the quality of student work and offered unique learning opportunities. Participants ranged from elementary to high school students, with two high school students bringing the exhibition to their own schools—gaining hands-on experience in leadership, planning, and community engagement.
