-Youth Workshop with Hannah Aspden

On April 25, 2026, NC Youth Impact, in collaboration with CAST-NC, hosted an inspiring youth leadership and storytelling session in Cary, NC featuring U.S. Paralympic swimmer Hannah Aspden — two-time Paralympic gold medalist at Tokyo 2020.
From Challenge to Champion Mindset
Born without her left leg, Hannah Aspden shared her journey in elite competitive swimming, reflecting on the fears, setbacks, and persistence behind her success. She emphasized that achievement is not defined only by medals, but by personal growth and resilience.
One of her most memorable messages to students was:
“Swimming is something I do — it’s not who I am.”
She encouraged youth to separate identity from performance, reminding them that setbacks are part of the process, not the end of it.
The Bronze Medal That Changed Everything
Hannah shared that, surprisingly, her most meaningful medal is not a gold, but her first bronze. That experience, she explained, taught her that success is less about winning and more about knowing you gave your best effort and can walk away at peace.
She also introduced the Team USA “5-Minute Rule”: after disappointment, allow yourself a short moment to feel the emotions, then reset and move forward with focus and purpose.
Reframing nerves as a positive signal, she added:
“You feel nervous because you care. You care because you love it.”
A Message for Parents and Youth
During the interactive Q&A, Hannah offered a simple but powerful message for parents supporting young people through challenges:
“Listen.”
She emphasized listening not to immediately solve problems, but to create space where children feel heard, respected, and supported. She also highlighted that parents and children function best as a team, not in a hierarchy.
Youth Voices and Closing Reflections
Student leader Emilia Liu, who introduced Hannah at the event, later reflected:
“Perspective shapes success.”
The session also highlighted the importance of youth leadership and community engagement. Special appreciation goes to Bella Huang for helping make this meaningful connection possible and supporting the collaboration between organizations.
The event brought together youth participants, families, and community members in a shared space of learning, resilience, and inspiration—reinforcing NC Youth Impact’s mission to empower young leaders through real-world dialogue and mentorship.
